Maribel’s Sweets Recalling Candies Because of Undeclared Nuts

Maribel’s Sweets of New York is recalling its “New York Handbag Collection” gourmet chocolates because they may contain undeclared peanuts and pistachios, which are tree nuts. Those who are allergic to peanuts and/or tree nuts may have a serious or life-threatening reaction if they eat the candies. The candies were distributed throughout the United States in retail stores and mail order.

The candies were distributed between November 1, 2011 and December 23, 2011.

No illnesses have occurred in connection with these candies. The candies are perfectly safe to eat for those without peanut or tree nut allergies. Tree nuts and peanuts are two of the eight major allergens. Their presence in a food requires a declaration on the front label.

The recall began after the company found that the nut-containing products were distributed in a mislabeled package. The label has since been corrected. If you have purchased these candies and have a tree nut and/or peanut allergy, return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. If you have questions, call 1-212-925-6999 Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.
