American Licorice Company Recalls Red Vines For Lead

American Licorice Company of California is recalling Red VinesĀ® Black Licorice Twists because of elevated lead levels. Only the one pound (16 ounce) bag of the candy with “Best Before Date” of 020413 are affected by the recall.

The problem was discovered by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Lead can cause health problems, especially to small children, infants, and pregnant women. The candy is a black licorice candy packed in a red white white bag with a window displaying the licorice twists.

Analysis of the candy by CDPH found it contained lead levels as high as .33 parts per million. That provides up to 13.2 micrograms of lead per serving. Children under the age of 6 should not consume more than 6.0 micrograms of lead per day from all sources.

If you have purchased this candy, do not eat it. Return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. If you did eat the candy, or your children did, consult with your health care provider to determine if medical testing is required.
