Daniella Mangoes May be Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

Daniella-brand mangoes may be linked to a Salmonella Braenderup outbreak that has sickened more than 73 people in California. Six people in Washington state are also ill with this bacteria, but the state is not prepared to link those illnesses to the fruit. The mangoes, imported from Mexico, have been recalled in Canada, where they are linked to 22 illnesses. Giant Food stores, Stop & Shop, and Martin’s stores have recalled the mangoes.

SalmonellaUpdate: The FDA has announced the Splendid Products LLC and Giant Food stores recall. Charlie’s Produce has voluntarily recalled the Daniella mangoes with PLU number 4959. The California Department of Public Health is investigating the illness; 67% of patients in that state diagnosed with a Salmonella Braenderup infection reported eating mangoes in the week before they became ill. The FDA and CDC have not announced any information about this investigation or a possible nationwide recall.

If you have purchased mangoes in the last few weeks, check the sticker to see if it the Daniella brand and if it has the PLU number 4959. Discard any fruit with this sticker. Always wash fruits and vegetables before you peel and prepare them. And if you have eaten mangoes in the past week and are showing symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning, which include fever, diarrhea, headache, and abdominal cramps, see your health care provider immediately.

A Salmonella infection can have long-term health consequences, including Reiter’s syndrome, which can lead to inflammation of the spine, eye, and reactive arthritis. About 10% of patients with Reiter’s syndrome develop heart problems.
