Dole Lettuce Recalled for Possible Listeria Contamination

The USDA has announced that Dole Fresh Vegetables is recalling 2,598 cases of bagged salad for potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was Dole Hearts of Romaine, coded 0540N165112A or B. The use by date is June 26, 2012, and the UPC number is 71430000956. The salad was distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

RecallA sample of the product tested positive in a random test conducted by the FDA. No illnesses have been reported in association with the consumption of this product. Listeria monocytogenes causes serious foodborne illness. Those with weakened immune systems and chronic illnesses, the elderly, the very young, and pregnant women are most seriously affected by this bacteria. Symptoms include fever, nausea, diarrhea, and muscle aches. Pregnant women may have very mild symptoms, but the bacteria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
