Giant, Kroger, Rainbow, BI-LO, Whole Foods, Stop & Shop May be Part of Salmonella Mango Recall

Splendid Products has recalled Daniella brand mangoes imported from Mexico that may be linked to a Salmonella Braenderup outbreak in the United States. In Canada, those mangoes have been recalled and are definitively linked to an outbreak that has sickened 21 people: 5 in Alberta and 16 in British Columbia.

ImportantThe mangoes have a PLU number on the sticker attached to the fruit. The PLU numbers for the recalled mangoes that have been reported today include 3114, 4959, 4051, 4321, 4311, 4961, and 4584. The stores in the United States that may be part of the recall include Aldi, BI-LO, Copps, Costco, El Super, Food 4 Less, Giant Food, Kroger, LLC, Mariano’s, Martin’s Food Market, Metro Market, Pick ‘n Save, Rainbow, Ralph’s, Savemart, Stop & Shop, TOP Food & Drug, Topco, Walmart, and Whole Foods.

In the U.S., 103 people have been sickened in an outbreak caused by Salmonella Braenderup. But, even though mangoes have been recalled specifically by Splendid Produce and Giant Foods, the CDC has not officially tied the mangoes to the outbreak. Government officials did say, however, that the DNA of the bacteria that has sickened people in the U.S. is a match to the DNA of the bacteria that has sickened people in Canada. And that bacteria was tied to recalled Daniella mangoes.

If you have eaten mangoes and experienced symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning, including diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, chills, and vomiting, please contact your healthcare provider. Tell her what you ate and about your symptoms; she will test to see if you are part of the outbreak. And if you didn’t eat mangoes and have these symptoms, see your healthcare provider. The CDC has not absolutely connected the recalled mangoes to the outbreak; there may be other foods that are the source of the bacteria. It’s important that anyone with a Salmonella infection get medical care, since long term consequences of the illness can be severe.
