Gills Onions Recalls Products for Possible Listeria Contamination

Gills Onions LLC of California is recalling one day’s production of diced and slivered red and yellow onions and diced celery and onion mix because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The products are packaged under the brand “Gills Onions” and were shipped July 2, 3, and 4, 2012 to retailers in Canada and California, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, and Washington.

The FDA found that a random sample of diced yellow onions taken at retail tested positive for the bacteria. So Gills Onions is recalling all products processed that day on that line. The company is also notifying retailers and asking them to remove the products from store shelves.

You can see all of the products, the lot code, use-by dates, and UPC numbers at the FDA site. Since the same UPC code can be found in products that are not recalled, make sure the lot code matches the recall list before discarding the product.

If you have purchased any of these products, do not consume them, but return to the place of purchase for a refund. If you have questions, call the company at 1-800-348-2255 Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm PDT.  If you have symptoms of Listeria, including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, please see your healthcare provider.
