M.E. Thompson Recalls Deli Brand Sandwich for Listeria

M.E. Thompson, Inc., of Jacksonville Florida is recalling Anytime Deli Turkey & Ham Sub Sandwich because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacteria is an illegal adulterant in ready-to-eat foods.

Details of the product:

  • Anytime Deli Turkey & Ham Sub Sandwich
  • UPC number 0543200194 located on the bottom of the product beneath the Ingredient and Nutrition Facts label
  • Expiration or “best by” dates of January 19, 2012 and January 22, 2012 located on the white press-on circular label
  • Distributed on January 2 and January 3, 2012 to convenience stores in Florida and southern Georgia
  • Sandwich is packaged in white butcher wrap

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of this product. The recall was issued after routine sampling by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services revealed the finished product contained Listeria.

Listeria monocytogenes symptoms include high fever, severe headache, nausea, stiffness, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeriosis, the infection caused by the bacteria, can be fatal in young children, the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, those with compromised immune systems, and pregnant women. It can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
