Michael Foods Recalls Hard-Cooked Eggs Packed in Brine

After smaller recalls stretching back to January 27, 2012, Michael Foods Inc. is recalling specific lots of hard-cooked eggs packed in brine sold in 10- and 25-pound pails for institutional use. The recall totals more than 150,000 pounds of eggs in 24 production lot dates. The eggs were produced at the company’s Wakefield, Nebraska facility and may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The eggs were not sold directly to consumers by Michael Foods. But the companies that bought the eggs from Michael Foods used them in products that were sold to retail outlets or used in foodservice settings. If you believe you purchased these eggs, contact the original place of purchase.

Lab testing revealed that some of the eggs may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. That bacteria is serious because listeriosis kills about 20 to 30% of the people who contract it. Apparently, a repair project in the packaging room was the “likely” source of contamination.
