XL Foods Ground Beef Recall for E. coli 0157:H7 Expands to U.S.

The Canadian recall for XL Foods, Inc. ground beef products for possible E. coli 0157:H7 contamination has expanded to the United States. The USDA discovered the problem when it tested a sample of the meat at the US/Canadian border. Several U.S. processors received beef from the recalled lot.

Important RecallBrands in the U.S. affected by the recall include Morasch Meats, Calahoo, Kirkland Signature, and Cattleman’s. The USDA’s FSIS site has not posted recall information on their site, but Kroger has released a recall of KRO Ground Beef 73% 3#, 3 lb. The beef was sold at Kroger stores in the greater Cincinnati area, northern Kentucky, Dayton Ohio, southeastern Indiana, Indiana (except for Evansville), Illinois, and eastern Missouri. It was also sold at Jay C, Food4Less and FoodsCo.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of these products.  E. coli 0157:H7 is a dangerous bacteria that can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome that can destroy the kidneys. It only takes 10 E. coli bacteria to make a person sick. You can see the list of products recalled in Canada at the Canadian Food Inspection site.
