Avon Recalls Popcorn Makers for Burn Hazard

Avon is recalling 54,700 microwave popcorn makers because of burn and fire hazards. The popcorn can overheat in the appliance and ignite when the kernels are cooked too long. The recalled makers are number 474-105 in Avon’s brochures. There have been 20 reports of the popcorn makers overheating. No injuries have been reported, but there have been two fires in consumer’s homes.

The popcorn maker is made of a clear tub and yellow lid with a vent. The maker is 6 inches high and 7.5 inches in diameter. It has three feet at the base.  The gadget was made in Taiwan. The words “DO NOT REMOVE WITH BARE HANDS. HOLD UNIT WITH GLOVES” is molded into the plastic of the lid and “USE IN MICROWAVE OVEN ONLY” is molded into the underside of the bowl.

If you have this popcorn maker in your home, stop using it immediately. Contact Avon to get updated instructions on how to use it safely at 800-367-2866 form 8:00 am to 8:30 pm Monday through Friday. You can also see the new instructions on Avon’s web site. The products were sold from October 2012 to February 2013.
