California Botulism Risk in Sister Sara’s Good for You Products

The California Department of Public Health is warning consumers not to eat “Sister Sara’s Good for You” products because they may be susceptible to Clostridium botulinum contamination. No illnesses have been reported in association with the consumption of these products. The products were sold at certified farmers markets in Alameda County.

Public health officials discovered that the products were made without required controls to prevent botulism toxin. A tiny amount of the botulism toxin can cause serious illness and death.

The products were sold in one pint glass canning jars with screw on metal lids. They are “Sister Sara’s Good for You Soup”, Sister Sara’s Bread & Butter Pickles”, Sister Sara’s Pickled Beets”, and “Sister Sara’s Old Fashioned Dill Pickles.” There are no date or production codes on the products. We’ve uploaded pictures of the recalled products.

If you experience the symptoms of botulism poisoning, including blurred or double vision, trouble swallowing or speaking, muscle weakness, see a health care provider immediately. Discard these products if you purchased them. If you see them for sale, call the CDPH complaint line at 800-495-3232.
