In Canada, Grated Coconut Recalled for Possible Salmonella

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning consumers not to consume Diwa brand grated coconut imported from the Philippines because it may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. There have been no confirmed illnesses reported to date in connection with the consumption of this product.

The coconut was distributed nationally. The Diwa grated coconut was sold in 16 ounce (454 gram) packages with no product code, but with a UPC number of 6 28838 52049 3, and in 40 x 16 ounce cases with code SPO313 and no UPC code.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look, taste, or smell spoiled. Eating food contaminated with this pathogenic bacteria can cause salmonellosis, which can cause serious or deadly illness in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
