Listeria Concern Prompts Il Villaggio Cheese Recall in Canada

Possible Listeria contamination in certain Il Villaggio cheeses has prompted a recall in Canada. The Gorgonzola Dolce Cheese was distributed to retail stores in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

No illnesses have been reported in association with this recall. But Listeria can cause serious illness. An ongoing multistate Listeria outbreak associated cheeses made by Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheeses has sickened five people including a pregnant woman who suffered a miscarriage and an elderly adult who died.

Pregnant women and others with compromised immune systems, small children and seniors are at special risk for contracting listeriosis, the infection caused by the bacteriaListeria monocytogenes. Pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, but can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn child, miscarriage and stillbirth.

Symptoms of listeriosis can take up to two months to develop and include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should see a doctor.
