Little Mermaid Smoke House Recalls Products for Botulism

Little Mermaid Smoke House is recalling products because they were uneviscerated, and have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. This bacteria can cause life-threatening illness and death with a very small amount. The food will not look, smell, or taste spoiled.

The recalled products are Little Mermaid Smoked Herring Fish sold before 4/4/13 and Little Mermaid Pickled Herring fish, sold before 4/4/13. The products are distributed in the state of California. They are sold as whole fish packaged in vacuum sealed packaging. The packages vary in weight and size. There are no codes for the products. No illnesses have been reported to date.

The sale of uneviscerated fish is prohibited because the botulism spores are more concentrated in this area than any other portion of the fish. Symptoms of botulism poisoning include general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking and swallowing. If you experience these symptoms see a doctor immediately.

If you purchased these products, do not eat them. Return to the place of purchase for a refund. For questions, call the Little Mermaid Smoke House at 818-764-0005 Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm PT.
