Merit Bird Food Recalled for Possible Salmonella

Merit Bird Company of California is recalling several types of bird food because it may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date.

signRecall SignageThe recalled product is Vitae Cockatiel with Sunflower 2 pounds (#2840081), Vitae Cockatiel with Sunflower 4 pounds (#2840090), Vitae Small Hookbill 4 pounds, (#2840225), Vitae Small Hookbill 20 pounds, (#2840234), Vitae Hookbill with Sunflower 4 pounds, (#2840252), and Vitae Large Hookbill 4 pounds, (#2840279). The products were shipped between May 2012 to February 2013 and distributed thorugh Southern California retail pet stores. The bird food is packaged in a factory sealed plastic bag, or for the 20 pound size, a white bulk bag.

People can be sickened by touching the contaminated food and then eating or touching their faces without washing their hands. Animals with Salmonella infections can be lethargic, with bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy animals can be carriers of the bacteria and infect others.
