National Beef Packing Recalls Beef Tongue for E. Coli O157:H7

National Beef Packing of Kansas is recalling about 690 pounds of beef tongue root filet products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, according to the USDA. Thirty pound boxes of the beef, with product code “12753” and establishment number “EST. 262” inside the USDA mark of inspection, have a pack date of “081913A”.

E. coli BacteriaThe products were made on August 19, 2013 and were shipped to a distributor in Amarillo, Texas for further processing. The problem was discovered through routine FSIS monitoring, which confirmed a positive result for the pathogenic bacteria. An investigation determined National Beef Packing Company was the sole supplier of the source materials used to make the positive product. There have been no reports of illnesses to date associated with the consumption of this product.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that causes bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can lead to kidney failure. All consumers should cook ground beef to a temperature of 160 degrees F, verified with a food thermometer and handle raw beef products with care.
