Pran Brand Tumeric Recalled For High Lead Levels, 1 Illness Reported

lead-tumeric-recallOnTime Distribution Inc. of Brooklyn, NY, is recalling Pran brand Tumeric powder because it contains high levels of lead that could cause health problems. One illness has been reported. Consumers who have purchased this product should not eat it.

 Analysis of the recalled product found that it contained lead levels as high as 28 and 42 parts per million (ppm). The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) action level for lead in water is 15 ppb.

Pregnant women, infants and young children are especially at risk as exposure to lead can impair brain development and impair kidney and nervous system function. Anyone concerned about blood lead levels should contact their physician to ask about testing.

The recalled product was distributed in New York and New Jersey through retail stores and direct delivery. It was sold in  clear plastic jars with yellow plastic lids: Net Wt. 8.82 oz./250 gm with UPC 8 31730 0055 and “best before” date of 26 OCT 14, and Net Wt. 14.1 oz./400 gm with UPC 8 46656 00209 4. and BEST BEFORE: 15 JAN 15.
