PRAN Turmeric Recall for Lead Contamination Expanded

Pran-Turmeric-BottlePRAN Turmeric powder has been recalled because it contains high levels of lead. Yesterday, we told you that the spice was sold in Michigan. Now Asia Cash & Carry of Maspeth New York, is recalling the product. One illness complaint has been received. Sampling by New York State Health Department found the high levels of lead.

Lead is a poison that causes health problems, including delayed mental and physical development and learning deficiencies. The turmeric contains lead at 28 parts per million. The PRAN brand spice powder Turmeric was distributed in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia, and Illinois through retail stores.

The product is packaged in a clear plastic jar with a yellow plastic lid. The label says net wt. 8.82 oz/250 grams. UPC number is 8 31730 00551, and date code is BEST BEFORE 02 SEP 14. If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

Edited to add another recall: OnTime Distribution of New York is recalling the turmeric as well. It was packed in clear plastic jars with yellow plastic lids. The first is the 8.82 oz. size, the same as in the paragraph above, and in addition, 14.1 oz/400 gram packages are recalled, with UPC number 8 46656 00209 4. You can see the picture of that product at the FDA web site.

Edited to add yet another recall: Fahman Enterprises of Texas is recalling the turmeric, packaged in a transparent plastic flexible bag. Best before date is 25 JAN 15 and barcode 8 3173000502 3. It was sold in Dallas, Texas between July 2013 and September 2013. A photo of the label is at the FDA web site.

If you are concerned about lead intake, see your doctor for a blood test. That’s the only way to determine if you may have health problems. Turmeric can be contaminated with lead because it is sometimes adulterated with lead chromate, sand, or yellow earth.
