PRAN Turmeric Recalled for Elevated Lead Content

Best Value of Michigan is recalling PRAN turmeric powder because it contains high levels of lead. Lead is a poison that can affect children’s developing brains. Lead poisoning can reduce IQ, cause kidney damage, and learning and hearing problems. The turmeric contains 53 ppm of lead based on sampling by the FDA. No complaints have been reported to date, but children with lead poisoning usually do not look or feel sick. The only way to diagnose lead poisoning is with a blood test.

The turmeric powder is packaged in 400 gram transparent plastic flexible bags with BEST BEFORE 26 OCT 14 and bar codeĀ #8 3173000502 3. It was distributed in and around Hamtramck, Michigan through retail stores. If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

  1. Hi,
How does lead get in turmeric in the first place?

    • Linda Larsen says

I found some sources online that said that turmeric from other countries is sometimes “bulked up” with talc, lead chromate, or yellow earth that contains lead.
