In Canada, Liver Pate Recalled for Possible Botulism

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Webbers Food are recalling “Hausmacher” liver pate because it may permit the growth of Clostridium botulinum, a dangerous bacteria. A very tiny amount of the toxin this bacteria produces can cause paralysis and death. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.

The recalled product is “Hausmacher” liver pate, in various sides, with no codes and no UPC number. The product was sold in glass jars with no label from November 13, 2013 to December 5, 2013, inclusively, at Hammonds Plains Farmers’ Market in Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia; and at Lunenburg Farmers’ Market in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

If you have this product in your home, do not eat it. Throw it out immediately in a sealed container. Food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum toxin will not look, smell, or taste spoiled. Symptoms of this poisoning include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, blurred or double vision, dry mouth, respiratory failure, and paralysis.
