Massive Smoked Salmon Listeria Recall in 2012 Triggers Lawsuit

After weathering one of the largest seafood recalls in history, Seattle-based Ocean Beauty Seafoods is suing salmon supplier Marine Harvest for $ 2 million in damages, according to undercurrentnews.com.

Salmon TapewormIn late 2012, Marine Harvest issued a recall for smoked salmon products from its plant in Chile and distributed throughout the U.S. by Ocean Beauty. The recall triggered a number of recalls of various brands of smoked salmon sold at grocery stores all over the country. Eventually, the recall grew to include 110 days worth of production at Marine Harvest’s plant in Chile,  prompted the plant’s permanent closure and translated to a loss of $4.4 million for the company. Ocean Beauty says it lost $2 million on the recall and that Marine Harvest has failed to compensate it .

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal illness. Symptoms of an infection include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. For pregnant women, who may have only mild flu-like symptoms, listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
