Oscar’s Smokehouse Cheese Spreads Recalled for Listeria

Oscar’s Smokehouse Inc. of New York is recalling eleven of its cheese spreads because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date, but the incubation period for listeriosis can be as long as 70 days.

Oscars Smoke House Listeria RecallAll of the recalled products are sold in 7 ounce packages. They include Jalapeno Pepper Cheddar Spread, Cheddar Spread & Blue Cheese, Champagne Cheddar Spread, Garlic Cheddar Spread, Port Wine Cheddar Spread, Tangy Horseradish Cheddar Spread, Plain Cheddar Spread, “More Than” Cheddar Spread, Hickory Smoked Cheddar Spread, Bacon & Horseradish Cheddar Spread, and Bacon Cheddar Spread. The three-digit lot numbers range from 719 to 959, marked on the bottom of the container or the cheese spread label. The products were distributed nationwide through mail order, wholesale sales, and one retail store. You can see product labels at the FDA web site.

This recall is linked to the Parkers Farm Acquisition recall for Listeria monocytogenes discovered by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. The Cheese Spread Base was used to manufacture the recalled Oscar’s Smokehouse Cheese Spreads.

If you purchased these products, do not eat them. Discard them or return to the place of purchase for a refund. If you ate any of these products, watch for symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. They include stiff neck, fever, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable to listeriosis, which can cause miscarriage and stillbirth, but the women may only be mildly ill with flu symptoms.
