Perdue Recalls Fresh Chicken for Improper Temperatures

Perdue Foods of Maryland is recalling about 720 pounds of raw, fresh chicken because they may have experienced a processing deviation in temperature during production. There have been no reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of this product.

The recalled product is 80 pound cardboard boxes containing about 28, 2.5-pound ice-packed, sealed packages of “COOKIN’ GOOD WHOLE YOUNG CHICKENS” with giblets and necks. The chickens were produced September 3, 2014 and shipped to a New York distributor for re-sale and foodservice use in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The packages have the establishment number “P-764” on the  box.

The company discovered the problem when an employee checking whole bird temperatures noticed variations. The facility found that a plant worker turned the wrong water valve, using potable water instead of chilled in the system’s chiller. Product in the warehouse was destroyed, but nine cases were placed into commerce.

If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Discard or return to the place of purchase for a refund. Bacteria grow easily and rapidly in any raw meats that are stored between 40°F and 140°F. These bacteria may produce toxins that are not destroyed by cooking temperatures. If you ate this product and have been ill, see a healthcare provider as soon as possible.
