Salmonella Fear Prompts Costco Pepper Recall

Olde Thompson Inc. of Oxnard, Calif. is recalling Kirkland brand pepper sold at Costco stores because of possible Salmonella contamination. Consumers who have purchased this product should not use it as Salmonella can cause serious illness.

Costco Pepper RecallThe recalled product is Kirkland Signature Coarse Ground Malabar Pepper sold in 12.7 oz  plastic jars with a “best before” date of 03/2017 and the lot numbers: OT 065099, OT 065169, OT 065254, OT 065255, OT 065256, or OT 065284.  The product was sold nationwide only at Costco stores  between April 4, 2014 and June 4, 2014

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, seniors and others with weakened immune systems.  Symptoms of a Salmonella infection, called salmonellosis include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In a small number of cases, the infection can travel from the digestive tract to the bloodstream producing more severe illnesses.

The problem was discovered during routine testing by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Costco is notifying members who purchased the pepper.
