Trader Joe’s Egg White Salad Recalled for Listeria

Lansal Inc. doing business as hot Mama’s Foods is recalling 304 containers of Trader Joe’s Egg White Salad with Chives because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. No illnesses have been reported to date, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, can take up to two months to develop.

Trader Joe Egg White Salad Listeria RecallThe 114 pounds of salad is packaged in 6 ounce plastic containers, with UPC number 00666695 and sell by date of June 10, 2014 stamped on the edge of the lid. The potential for Listeria contamination was found during testing by the company. It was sold in Trader Joe’s grocery stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Return it to the place of purchase or discard it in a sealed container. Clean out your refrigerator with a mild bleach solution, since Listeria can grow at refrigerator temperatures.

If you ate any of this product, you must watch yourself for the symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes poisoning for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include fever, severe headache, abdominal pain and diarrhea, stiffness, and nausea. Pregnant women may only be mildly ill, but listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth. If you do become sick, see your doctor and tell him you ate this recalled product.
