Two People Ill, Associated with VR Green Farms Jarred Food in CA

The California Department of Public Health is warning consumers not to eat VR Green Farms jarred food products because they may have been contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The jars were not properly processed. Consuming food contaminated with botulinum toxin can lead to serious illness and death.

VR Green Farms Botulism RecallTwo people are sick with botulism poisoning that officials suspect may be associated with the company’s Pine Nut Basil Pesto. The symptoms of botulism poisoning include double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, and dry or sore throat. If no treatment is received, symptoms will include descending paralysis, usually symmetrical, followed by trouble breathing. Infants with botulism poisoning appear lethargic, feed poorly, are constipated, and have a weak cry and poor muscle tone. If anyone is experiencing these symptoms, see a doctor immediately.

The recalled products include Pine Nut Basil Pesto, Pickled Farm Mix, Old World Tomato Sauce, Sundried Tomatoes in Olive Oil, Tuscan Grilling Sauce, and Pasta Sauce. These products were sold under the VR Farms label and packaged in Mason-style glass jars with screw-on metal lids. There is no coding or “use by” dates on the labels. They were sold at the VR Green Farms stand in San Clemente, California and via the internet throughout the United States.

Remember that botulism toxin is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. If you have any of these products in your home, discard them immediately in double bags. Place in the trash receptacle for non-recycleable trash. Wear gloves when handling these products, or wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after touching them. If you see these products on sale, report to CDPH at 800-495-3232.
