Washington State Deli Recalls Canned Tomato Juice and Adjika

Marvel Food & Deli in Washington state is recalling all of its tomato juice and adjika (a spicy dip sometimes called Russian pesto) because the canning process needs to go through testing and evaluation. There have been no complaints of illness connected to the consumption of these products.

But they were produced without the benefit of an approved procedure and permit, so are considered adulterated. Canned products that are inadequately processed may provide ideal growth conditions for Clostridium botulinum bacterium.

Marvel Food & Deli has removed all existing in-house canned tomato juice and adjika from its shelves. The company will work with state and local agencies for approval of any future in-house canning production and sales.

The symptoms of botulism poisoning typically start 12 to 36 hours after eating a contaminated food. The food will not look, smell, or taste spoiled. Symptoms include blurred vision, dry mouth, paralysis, difficulty swallowing and breathing, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea. If you ate these products and are experiencing these symptoms, please see a doctor immediately.
