Sobeys Chicken Salads Recalled for Possible Listeria in Canada

Sobeys is recalling some in-store prepared salads in Canada for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. No illnesses have been reported to date, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this pathogenic bacteria, can take up to 70 days to appear.

You can see the list of recalled products at the CFIA web site, along with sizes, product codes, and UPC numbers. They include Greek Chicken Salad, Caesar Chicken Salad, Chicken Spring Mix Salad, Chicken Ham Salad, Mandarin Chicken Salad, Cobb Salad, and Muskoka Chicken Salad. You an see pictures of product labels at the CFIA site as well. They were sold at Sobeys and IGA stores in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

If you purchased any of these products, do not eat them. Discard in a sealed container or return to the place of purchase for a refund. Then clean out your fridge with a mild bleach solution to kill Listeria bacteria, which can grow at refrigerator temperatures.

If you ate any of these recalled salads, watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. Those symptoms are flu-like, and include vomiting, nausea, fever, muscle aches, headache, and neck stiffness. Pregnant women need to be especially vigilant, since listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth, even though the woman is only mildly ill. If you do get sick, see your doctor.
