Wegmans Frozen Spinach Recalled for Possible Listeria

Wegmans Food Markets is recalling 12,450 packages of their frozen spinach because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, can take up to 70 days to appear.

Wegmans Frozen Spinach Listeria RecallThe recalled product is Wegmans Organic Food You Feel Good About Just Picked Frozen Spinach in 12 ounce packages. The UPC number is 77890-32932. It was sold in the company’s 85 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts between January 27 and March 21, 2015. Only packages with these codes are affected: Best used by JAN 26 2017 50265 and Best Used by FED 02 2017 50335.

If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Discard in a closed container or return to the place of purchase for a refund. Then clean out your freezer with a mild bleach solution, since freezing does not kill this bacteria.

If you ate this product, watch yourself for the symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include fever, stiff neck, muscle aches, and other flu-like symptoms. Pregnant women may only be mildly ill, but listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
