Largest Multistate Food Poisoning Outbreaks 2015: #4 Tuna

The fourth-largest multistate food poisoning outbreak of the year was a Salmonella outbreak linked to frozen raw tuna used for sushi and other dishes. The outbreak sickened 65 people in 11 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eleven people were hospitalized. Health officials linked the outbreak frozen, yellowfin tuna produced by Osamu Corporation at a processing plant in Indonesia. The company issued two recalls. One on July 20, the other on July 21. Salmonella can cause serious, sometimes fatal infection. Young children, seniors, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems. Imported Tuna in Sushi Sickens Two in Minnesota with Salmonella

Sushi made with frozen tuna imported from Indonesia has sickened two people in Minnesota and dozens of others in 10 other states. The frozen tuna, imported by Osamu Corp. of Gardena, CA, is contaminated with Salmonella. The case patients in Minnesota,  both from the Twin Cities metro area, are in their 30s. Although they became ill with symptoms of Salmonella poisoning, including fever, nausea, vomiting, chills and diarrhea, neither of them required hospitalization. Eleven others who are part of the multistate outbreak were hospitalized. The tuna product, packaged in frozen, vacuum-sealed bags without a brand or other name, was distributed to  grocery stores, restaurants and institutional kitchens. CDC Looks for Outbreak Strain in Raw Ground Tuna, Finds Other Salmonella

Health officials in Arizona, where at least 10 people are part of a multistate raw ground tuna outbreak, tested some suspect product for Salmonella and found, not the outbreak strain, but two other strains of the bacteria, according to the latest update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  A search of the PulseNet database did not reveal any reported illnesses associated with the strains and a recall has been issued for the ground tuna product imported from Indonesia by Osamu Corp. As of June 4, no new illnesses have been reported in the outbreak which includes 53 people in nine states infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+) also called Salmonella Java.
