Cheese and Yogurt Recall in Canada Over Listeria Concerns

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall on December 13, 2011 of certain cheese and yogurt products that were distributed in Ontario and Québec, Canada. That recall was expanded on December 18, 2011.

Recall Warnings SmallerThere has been one reported illness associated with these products.

The manufacturer of the cheese and yogurt, 3903052 Canada Inc., of Boisbriand, Québec, is voluntarily recalling the foods. The products include:

  • Bio-Life Adigeisky Cheese, with Universal Product Code (UPC) 7 78546 07000 8 and a “best before” date of December 16, 2011
  • Bio-Life “Epebah – Fromage Armenian Brinza” cheese, with UPC 7 78546 19000 3 and a “best before” date of October 19, 2011
  • Bio-Life Erevan (Istanbuli) cheese with a “best before” date of October 29, 2011;
  • Bio-Life Suluguni Cheese with UPC 7 78546 11000 1 and a “best before” date of January 4, 2012
  • Fromagerie Marie Kade Batonnet Riviera with UPC 7 78546 14250 7 and 7 78546 14001 5 and a “best before” date of February 15, 2012
  • Fromagerie Marie Kade Moumtaza, packaged on November 11, 2011
  • Fromagerie Marie Kade Santa Maria – Fresh Cheese with UPC 7 78546 20000 9 and a “best before” date of December 26, 2011
  • TIFCO Queso Fresco cheese with a “best before” date of May 4, 2012
  • Oaxaca cheese with a “best before” date of November 30, 2011
  • Bio-Life brand Kefir, Kefir Probiotic, and Ryazhenka with a “best before” date of December 9, 2011
  • Fromagerie Marie Kade yogurt with “best before” date of December 16, 2011
  • Bio-Life plain yogurt with a “best before” date of December 16, 2011
  • Bio-Life Toplenoe Maslo with a production date of March 26, 2011

Listeriosis, which is caused by eating foods contaminated with the Listeria bacterium, can be a serious illness. Those most at risk include pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems and chronic illnesses. Symptoms include muscle aches, fever, and GI symptoms such as diarrhea.
