Kroger and Smith Stores Recall Iceberg Lettuce

Kroger and Smith Stores are recalling Grower’s Express iceberg lettuce because of possible Salmonella contamination. The bacteria was found in a field next to the grower’s property in Arizona. The lettuce hasn’t tested positive for Salmonella. There may be as many of 1,000 heads of lettuce in this recall.

The recall was first considered a “Class I” recall, which means that the product “could cause serious health problems or death”. The recall was downgraded to “Class II”, a voluntary and precautionary recall for products that “might cause a temporary health problem, or pose only a slight threat of a serious nature” after the Salmonella source was not the lettuce, but an adjacent field.

The Smith’s grocery stores involved in the recall are in these states:

  • Idaho
  • Montana
  • Northern Nevada
  • Utah
  • Wyoming

Kroger stores involved in the recall are in:

  • Eastern Kentucky
  • North Carolina
  • Virginia
  • Eastern West Virginia

The lettuce is “Grower’s Express” brand. Stores have put up signs in produce departments and have started robocalling customers who used frequent shopper cards to buy the lettuce. The stores are also printing warnings on receipts.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the consumption of this product. None of the lettuce heads have tested positive for the bacteria, and the crops growing in that field have been destroyed.
