E. coli Prompts Beef Recall In Canada

Calahoo, Kirkland and Signature brand ground beef products are being recalled because of possible E.coli contamination, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The products were produced by XL Foods (Est. 38) of Edmonton, Alberta and delivered to various distributors and retailers. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall.

Recall SignageCFIA’s investigation is ongoing and other products may be identified as part of the recall. Eating food that is contaminated with E.coli can cause life-threatening or fatal illness. Symptoms of an E.coli infection include abdominal cramps and bloody diarrhea. Sometimes these infections cause seizures, strokes or kidney damage which requires blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Ground beef that is contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. Consumers who have purchased this meat should not eat it even if it looks or smells OK.

The following products are included in the recall: Calahoo Meats BB burgers, distributed in Alberta. Kirkland Signature ground beef, ground beef patties and tubes of ground beef distributed nationally with a “packed on” dates from August 30 to September 15, 2012. Safeway ground beef, ground chuck, ground beef patties, cheddar cheese patties, meatloaf, sliders, meatballs, stuffed green peppers and ground sirloin patties distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan with “best before” or “freeze by” dates from August 29 to September 19. And brandless ground beef sold at Walmart stores in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan marked EST 128 with “packed on” dates from September 7 through September 20.  Consumers who are not sure if the ground beef they have purchased is under recall should check with their grocery stores, CFIA advises.
