Penn State University Creamery Recalls Ice Cream

The University Creamy at Penn State is voluntarily recalling all ice cream and frozen yogurt made between May 16, 2012 and August 11, 2012 because of reports of isolated incidents of small plastic foreign objects in the products. The ice cream was manufactured and sold from the Berkey Creamery on the University Park campus of Penn State and was also available for purchase on the internet from the Creamery’s web site.

Food RecallUniversity police are involved in this recall; they launched a criminal investigation into the possible contamination. Three reports from consumers have detailed small pieces of plastic, about .82 inches in size, in half gallon containers in the ice cream. Out of an abundance of caution, the Creamy is recalling all ice cream and frozen yogurt products made during the above time period. The products have a Best If Used By date between February 10, 2013 and August 11, 2013.

Tom Palchak, Creamery manager, said, “the safety of the public is our number one concern. Although by all accounts these appear to be isolated incidents, they are troubling, to say the least. We have a longstanding reputation for safety at the Creamery and a product that consumers trust.” An independent investigation conducted for the Creamery suggests that the foreign objects did not get into the ice cream during the manufacturing process. The Creamery is going to use tamper-resistant packaging and prevention methods such as limiting access to production and packaging areas, increased surveillance, use of an X-ray device and metal detectors, and notification of ingredient suppliers to prevent a recurrence.

If you have purchased these products, do not eat them; return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or exchange. No injuries or illnesses have been reported in connection with the consumption of these products. If you think you may have eaten one of the foreign objects, see a healthcare provider immediately.
