Publix Recalls Sub Sandwiches Made with Gills Onions

Publix Super Markets is recalling custom sub sandwiches made with recalled Gills Onions. The onions were recalled on July 19, 2012 for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall includes any custom made sub sandwiches with sliced onions sold at the Publix Deli department from July 7, 2012 through July 26, 2012.

The onions were shipped to stores in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Publix stores in Florida are not included in this recall. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the sliced onions.

But the problem with this recall is that it can take up to 70 days for a Listeria infection to manifest with symptoms. So many people do not associate their illness with the food they ate that actually caused it. If you have eaten any food with onions and become ill, please see your healthcare provider.

Symptoms of listeriosis include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. While anyone can get sick, the very young, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and frail people can become seriously ill. Pregnant women are especially affected by Listeria bacteria. While they may have only mild symptoms, listeriosis can cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
