Sunland Expands Salmonella Peanut Butter Recall: All Products Made After March 1, 2010

Sunland has expanded its ongoing recall of nut products for possible Salmonella contamination to include ALL products manufactured in its Peanut Butter Plant after March 1, 2010. The expanded recall adds 139 products, including all previously identified Peanut Butter, Almond Butter, Cashew Butter, and Tahini products, as well as Roasted Blanched Peanut Products.

SalmonellaNone of the 139 additional products have been associated with any reported illness to date. On September 22, 102, the CDC and the FDA reported that an outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney linked to Trader Joe’s Valencia peanut butter, manufactured by Sunland, has sickened 29 people in the United States. That outbreak was updated today to include 35 people in 19 states. The FDA found Salmonella at the Sunland facility during its investigation, and is waiting for additional testing to learn if it is the outbreak strain of the bacteria.

They include Target’s Archer Farms, Cadia, Arrowhead Mills, Harry & David, Kirkland, Natural Value, Serious Food, Sun Harvest, Sunland, Trader Joe’s, fresh & easy, heinen’s, Naturally More, Peanut Power, Snaclite, Sprouts, and Dogsbutter. Derivative recalls have been issued as well. All products with “Best if Used By” dates of March 1, 2011 or later should be returned to the place of purchase or discarded immediately.  For questions and more information, call the company’s hotline at 1-866-837-1018.

Symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning include fever, diarrhea which may be bloody, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Especially in those in high risk groups, the bacteria may get into the bloodstream, causing arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
