Sunland Peanut Products Derivative Recalls for Possible Salmonella Begin

Derivative recalls, which are recalls triggered by the recall of ingredients used to make other products, have begun for Sunland products. Sunland recalled many products for possible Salmonella contamination on September 24, 2012, and then expanded that recall on September 25, 2012. Sunland is the manufacturer of Trader Joe’s Valencia Peanut Butter, which has been associated with a nationwide Salmonella Bredeney outbreak. That bacteria has sickened 30 people in 19 states.

Peanuts in ShellSeptember 25, 2012: Sunridge Candy, made by Falcon Trading Company/SunRidge Farms, is recalling three types of peanut candy made with Sunland products. Energy Nuggets, Peanut Butter Power Chews, and Treasure Trove Snack Mix were recalled. Chattanooga Bakery, maker of MoonPie®  and LookOut!™ branded snacks, recalled Peanut Butter Crunch products after learning about the Sunland recall. The cookies were made with Sunland products.

September 26, 2012: In Canada, certain Trader Joe’s brand nut butters were recalled for possible Salmonella contamination. Almond Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds, crunchy & salted, was recalled. And Valencia Peanut Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds, crunchy & salted, was recalled. Fresh & Easy is recalling nut butters and products made with nut butters because they were produced by Sunland Inc. and may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

September 27, 2012: Gretchen’s Shoebox Express is recalling Cinnamon Apple & Almond Butter Sandwiches and Almond Butter for possible Salmonella contamination. The products were made with ingredients from Sunland. Whole Foods is recalling peanut butter cookies sold in their self-serve pastry cases and packaged cookies because they were made with peanut butter from Sunland Inc.

September 28, 2012: Harry & David, LLC is recalling almond and peanut butter products for possible Salmonella contamination because they were made with Sunland products. Oregon Ice Cream Company recalls two peanut butter ice cream products because they were made with recalled Sunland ingredients.

September 29, 2012: Fairytale Brownies recalls Peanut Butter Sprites and Peanut Butter Cookies because they were made with ingredients from Sunland.  Justin’s recalls its peanut butter made with Sunland peanuts. Jer’s Chocolates recalls Peanut Butter Bars and Jer’s Squares because they include Sunland ingredients. And Whole Foods recalls peanut butter candies sold in bulk bins for possible Salmonella contamination.

October 2, 2012: Newman’s Own Organics recalled peanut butter creme filled chocolate cookies called Newman-O’s because they were made with Sunland products.

October 3, 2012: Late July Snacks recalls more mini peanut butter sandwich crackers because they were made with Sunland Products. Gretchen’s Shoebox recalls Starbucks Protein Bistro Box because it included a Justin’s peanut butter pouch that had been recalled for Salmonella concerns. Xan Confections recalls peanut butter chocolate candies because they were made with ingredients from Sunland.
