Marinated Pork, Chicken Recalled for Undeclared MSG

C & H Meat Company of California is recalling 79,400 pounds of marinated pork and chicken products because they are misbranded. They contain monosodium glutamate (MSG) that is not declared on the label. There have been no reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of these products.

The recalled products include 10 ounce packages and bulk packages of Korean Brand BBQ Flavored Spicy Pork Butt, 10 ounce packages and bulk packages of Marinated Spicy Pork Butt, and 10 ounce packages and bulk packages of Korean Brand BBQ Flavored Spicy Boneless Chicken Leg Meat. They may have the establishment number “EST. 4831” or “P-4831” inside the USDA mark of inspection. They were produced on various dates through January 16, 2013, and were distributed to retail establishments and restaurants in California. You can see all of the labels at the USDA web site.

The problem was discovered by FSIS personnel during a Food Safety Assessment. MSG is a sub-ingredient in a spice blend used to make the product, but wasn’t listed on the final product label. If you are sensitive to MSG, do not eat these products. Return them to the place of purchase for a refund. For questions and more information, call Steve Kim at 323-261-5388.
