Salmonella Outbreak in Shiawassee County, Michigan Sickens Seven

Courtney Herrick, Director of Personal and Community Health Services in Shiawassee County, Michigan, told Food Poisoning Bulletin that there is a Salmonella outbreak in that county. Seven people have been confirmed with the infection, and four cases are suspected. No one has been hospitalized in this outbreak.

SalmonellaThe illness onset dates range from 7/28/13 to 8/4/13. At this time, public health officials are not releasing the name of the restaurant in Owosso suspected as being the cause of the outbreak, as they are still trying to pinpoint the source.

The symptoms of a Salmonella infection include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, chills, headache, muscle pains, and blood in the stool. If you or anyone you know is suffering these symptoms, please see a doctor as soon as possible. The symptoms usually appear within six to seventy-two hours after exposure to the bacteria. Most people recover within a week, but some people become sick enough that they need to be hospitalized. About half of the nine different types of bacteria that cause foodborne illness deaths tracked by the CDC every year are caused by Salmonella.
