Wegmans Recalls Fruit Juices for Patulin, a Mold By-Product

Wegmans is recalling two types of its store brand fruit juices because they contain an unacceptable level of patulin, which is a by-product of mold. Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by molds such as Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Byssochylamys. An ingredient used to make the juices is the problem. Patulin is not Penicillin and it is not a mold. It’s not likely that exposure to patin at the low levels found in the juice would cause any symptoms, but you should not consume it because in laboratory animals it can cause DNA damage and damage the immune and nervous systems.

Recall SignThe recalled products are Wegmans Food You Feel Good About Organic Apple Juice in 64 ounce containers. The UPC number is 77890-20605-8 with expiration dates of 1/28/2014 through 3/19/2014. The other product is Wegmans Food You Feel Good About Organic Cranberry Juice Blend in 64 ounce bottles. The UPC number for that product is 77890-26689-2 with an expiration date of 11/5/2013.

If you purchased either of these products, dispose of it and bring the empty container to the service desk at your local store for a full refund. Do not drink the juice. For more information and questions, call Wegmans Consumer Affairs at 1-855-934-3663 Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
