Listeria Prompts Acme Smoked Nova Salmon Recall

Acme Smoked Fish Corporation of Brooklyn is recalling 564 pounds of imported Smoked Nova Salmon for possible Listeria contamination. The product was sold at Giant stores in Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. This recall was issued on November 18, 2014, but the FDA is just announcing it as an “urgent product recall notice”. The company contacted us and said the recall is now closed as of November 20, 2014.

Consumers who have purchased this product should not eat it as Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Young children, seniors, pregnant women and others with weakened immune systems are at highest risk. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. In pregnant women, Listeria infection can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.

The problem was discovered during routine testing by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. No illnesses had been reported at the time of the recall, but symptoms of a Listeria infection can take as long as 70 days to develop.

If you purchased this product and stored it in your fridge, discard it and clean your fridge with a mild bleach solution, since Listeria bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures. If you ate this product, monitor yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. If you do become ill, see your doctor.
