Salmonella in Pulled Pork the Culprit at Living Word Tabernacle Outbreak

Pulled pork was the source of a Salmonella outbreak that sickened 69 people who attended a church conference at Living Word Tabernacle Church in Bessemer City, NC October 1-5. Three people were hospitalized. The pork butts, prepared by a church member were, suffered temperature abuse when they were cooked partially and then reheated. Salmonellosis is an infection that develops when food or beverages contaminated with fecal matter containing Salmonella bacteria is ingested. Symptoms, which include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever,  usually appear within six to 72 hours of exposure and last up to a week. Talenti Gelato Recalled for Undeclared Peanut

Talenti Sea Salt Caramel Gelato is being recalled for undeclared peanut. Consumers with peanut allergies or severe sensitivities should not eat this product as they risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they do. The recalled product was distributed in one pint (473 mL) clear plastic jars with the UPC 8685200024 located on the side and best by date 05/19/2016 located on the bottom. No other best by dates or sizes of Sea Salt Caramel Gelato are affected by the recall, nor are other flavors. The product was distributed nationwide to retail stores. Wyoming Steps Closer to Legal Raw Milk, More Food Poisoning, Critics Charge

A bill that would legalize the sale of raw milk and home-grown food has passed both houses of the Wyoming State Legislature. But critics say the bill, called the Food Freedom Act, contains no consumer protections and will put people at risk for serious illness and death from food poisoning. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle editorial page said a better name for the bill would be the Food Illness Bill. The Wyoming Senate voted 20-8, with one abstention, to pass the bill. Criticism of the bill does not fall along part lines. Sen. Chris Rothfuss, D-Laramie, Sen. Charlie Scott, R-Casper  and Sen. Fred Emerich, R-Cheyenne are all opposed to the idea. Cryptosporidium in Raw Goat Milk Sickened 11 in Idaho

Cryptosporidium in raw milk sickened 11 people in Idaho last year, according to a new report from the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The outbreak, linked to Treasured Sunrise Farms in Parma, Idaho, was the first ever Cryptosporidium raw milk outbreak linked to raw goat milk. A  Cryptosporidium raw milk outbreak was linked to raw cow milk in Minnesota in 2010. The 11 ill people sickened ranged in age from 2 months to 76 years. The median age was 11. One person was hospitalized. Symptoms of an infection, which usually develop between two and 10 days of exposure, include: watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, fever, vomiting and weight loss. Beef is Source of Most E. coli Outbreaks

Beef is the source of most E. coli outbreaks, according to a new federal study by the Food Safety Analytics Collaboration of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The study was conducted to provide information that can be used to develop better food poisoning prevention measures. Of the 952 outbreaks attributed to one pathogen during the 14-year study period, 170 were caused by E.coli. Of those, 97 were caused by beef, 29 were caused by row vegetables, 18 were caused by dairy, 11 by fruit, 6 by sprouts, 4 by game, 2 by meat other than beef, pork, turkey chicken or game and 1 each by chicken, turkey and other produce. Salmonella Lawsuit from X 10 in Texas Outbreak in Dalhart

A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of a woman who contracted Salmonella after eating at the X 10 in Texas Wood Fired Grill in Dalhart. The woman, whose illness became so severe that her kidneys were failing, was hospitalized for a number of days. She is one of 59 people who Texas health officials say are part of an outbreak. The popular restaurant, located about 90 miles northwest of Amarillo, voluntarily closed for a cleaning after illnesses were reported and was cleared by the health department to reopen. Health authorities, who say no new cases occurred after the cleaning, are still trying to determine the source of the outbreak. Durand Dairy Denies Raw Milk Sickened Football Team

The owners of a farm linked to a raw milk Campylobacter outbreak that sickened dozens of students and coaches who attended a football banquet in Durand, Wisconsin agreed to have their Grade A permit suspended for 30 days, but deny their milk was the source of the outbreak. Last week, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection’s (DATCP) announced the farm's permit would be suspended for 30 days because of its link to the outbreak. The farm must abide by terms of an agreement with the ag department or face further penalties. Roland and Diana Reed pleaded no contest to a charge of distributing unpasteurized milk and maintain that outbreak was caused by other food served at the banquet. Preventing E. coli Outbreaks One Goal of NYC Restaurant Inspections

Can restaurant grading systems like the one in New York keep people out of the hospital? Reducing food poisoning from E. coli, other bacteria and unsanitary conditions is one of the goals of the these systems. With letter grading systems, restaurants have more of an incentive to use good food safety measures. New York's program requires restaurants to post the letter grade of their health inspection in their front window. The city began using the letter grading system in July 2010. Poor hygiene, improper food handling and storage and temperature abuse are the most common causes of bacterial and viral foodborne illnesses. Sunset Foods Recalls Sausage for Undeclared Soy

Sunset Farm Foods of Georgia is recalling 42,669 pounds of link sausage products because they may contain undeclared soy, one of the major food allergens. Those with an allergy to soy could have a serious reaction if they eat these products. No illnesses have been reported to date. The recalled products are 11 pound vacuum packed cases. The first is "Southern Chef Brand Smoked Link Sausage" and the second is "Georgia Maid Smoked Link Sausage." They have the establishment number "EST. 9185" inside the USDA mark of inspection. They also have a sell-by date between January 1, 2015 and May 28, 2015. They were sold at the retail level in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, and New York. Salmonella Outbreak at TN Prison Linked to Tyson Chicken

A Salmonella Heidelberg outbreak in 2013 at a Tennessee correctional facility that was linked to mechanically separated Tyson chicken sickened nine people. Twenty-two percent of those sickened were hospitalized; no deaths were reported. All of the ill persons were incarcerated at a single correctional facility in the state. Traceback and other investigations found that mechanically separated chicken produced by Tyson Foods was the source of the 2013 outbreak. Mechanically separated chicken is a paste-like meat product that is made by forcing meat through a sieve to separate bone from the edible part. The product then will have bacteria spread throughout it, similar to ground meats.
