Amy’s Kitchen Recalls Products for Possible Listeria Contamination

Amy’s Kitchen is recalling 73,897 cases of products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. One of Amy’s organic spinach suppliers notified the company that it may be contaminated. No illnesses have been reported, but the illness caused by this bacteria can take up to 70 days to appear.

You can see the long list of recalled products at the FDA web site, along with UPC numbers, lot codes, package sizes, and dates. They were distributed to stores nationwide in the United States and Canada. They include Vegetable Lasagna, Tofu Vegetable Lasagna, Brown Rice & Vegetables Bowl, Stuffed Pasta Shells Bowl, Tofu Scramble, and Enchilada Verde Whole Meal, among others. You can also see pictures of product labels at the FDA site.

If you purchased any of these products, do not eat them. Return to the place of purchase or discard in a sealed container. Clean out your freezer and/or refrigerator with a mild bleach solution to kill any remaining bacteria, since Listeria can grow even in cold temperatures.

If you ate any of these products, monitor yourself for the symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include fever, stiff neck, muscle aches, and other flu-like symptoms. Pregnant women may only be mildly ill, but listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth. Listeriosis can also cause serious infections in newborn babies. If you do get sick, see your doctor.
