Appeeling Fruit Recalls Sliced Apples for Listeria sold at Burger King

Apple SlicesAppeeling Fruit of Pennsylvania is recalling sliced apples because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No illnesses have been linked to this recall, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, can take up to 70 days to appear. The apples were sold under the Burger King and Snack Fresh brand names, as well as under the Appeeling label.

The recalled apples have best if used by dates of 09/14/15 and 09/21/15. They were shipped to retail distribution centers, wholesalers, and foodservice customers in Florida, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania between August 31 and September 2, 2015.

The recalled products sold under the Appeeling Fruit label are 12 ounce packages with fresh green apples slices; the UPC number is 58324 00950 and best if used by is 09/21/2015. Also recalled are 12 ounce packages with fresh red apple slices and UPC number 58324 00900. The best if used by date is 09/21/15. Also recalled are convenience packs of 8, 2 ounce sized bags of fresh, red apples slices. The bag of 8, 2 ounce bags has UPC number 58324 08400 and best if used by 09/21/15. The individual 2 ounce bags have UPC number 58324 00400 and best if used by date of 09/21/2015.

Also, Burger King (BK) Crown brand 2 ounce sized bags of fresh, red apples slices is recalled. The best if used by date on that product is 09/14/2015; there is no UPC number. Finally, Snack Fresh 2 ounce sized bags of fresh, red apple slices with UPC number 74641 00982 are recalled. The best if used by date on that product is 09/21/2015.

If you purchased these items, do not eat them. Discard in sealed containers or return to the place of purchase for a refund. Then wash your hands carefully and thoroughly with soap and running water. Clean out your refrigerator, or any place the apples may have touched, with a mild bleach solution. Unfortunately, Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures and these apples could contaminate other foods.

If you ate this recalled product, monitor yourself for the symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include flu-like fever and muscle aches, upset stomach or diarrhea, stiff neck, headache, loss of balance, confusion, or convulsions. Pregnant women may have only mild symptoms similar to the flu, but listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth. If you do get sick, see your doctor and tell her you ate this recalled product.
