Aspen Foods Recalls Frozen Breaded Chicken for Salmonella

Aspen Foods is recalling 1,978,680 pounds of frozen, raw, stuffed and breaded chicken products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis. These products are linked to a Salmonella outbreak in Minnesota. They were sold under multiple brand names.

Antioch Farms Recalled Chicken Salmonella OutbreakThese products were produced between April 15, 2015 and July 10, 2015 with “best if used by” dates between July 14, 2016 and October 10, 2016. The product has the establishment number “P-1358” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were shipped to stores and food service locations nationwide.

FSIS was notified of a Salmonella outbreak on June 23, 2015. Three case-patients have been identified in Minnesota. This is the second Salmonella outbreak in that state: the first is linked to recalled Barber Foods frozen, raw, stuffed chicken products.

These products include the brand names Roundy’s, Chestnut Farms, Market Day, Spartan, Acclaim, Family Favorites, Kirkwood, Safeway, Buckley Farms, Oven Cravers, Centrella Signature, Shaner’s, Schwan’s, Koch Foods, Antioch Farms, Rose, Sysco, and Rosebud Farm. The products are Chicken Kiev, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Chicken with Broccoli and Cheese, and many others. The list is very long; examine it carefully to see if you have any of these products.  Label images are in five PDFs at the USDA site; scroll down to the bottom of the page.

If you do have any in your freezer, discard in a double bagged container or return to the place of purchase for a refund. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling these products.

If you ate any of these products and have suffered the symptoms of a Salmonella infection, including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal cramps, see your doctor. The long term complications of a Salmonella infection can be serious, including arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, and heart problems.
