Canned Seafood Recalled in Canada

Vasco Da Gama brand canned seafood is being recalled in Canada for “the potential presence of dangerous bacteria”. The notice at the CFIA doesn’t specify which bacteria may have contaminated these products.

They include Mussels in Marinade sauce, Octopus and Squid in Garlic Sauce, Portuguese Sardines in Vegetable Oil, Mackerel Filets in Olive Oil, Portuguese Sardines in Hot Sauce, Small Sardines in Tomato Sauce, and Horse Mackerel in Vegetable Oil, among others. All are Vasco Da Gama brand. You can also see pictures of the recalled items at the CFIA site.

If you purchased these items, do not eat them. Discard or return to the place of purchase for a refund. The symptoms of illness associated with these foods include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, blurred or double vision, dry mouth, respiratory failure, and paralysis. Those symptoms sound like botulism. No illnesses have been reported to date.
