Garibaldi Cannery Recalls Tuna, Salmon for Possible Botulism

The Garibaldi Cannery of Oregon is voluntarily recalling all cans with any code starting with “OC” of their canned tuna and salmon products because they may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which can cause life-threatening illness. No illnesses have been reported to date.

The cans were distributed to consumers in Oregon and shipped nationwide via their company website. The last date of distribution of recalled products was September 2015. Any code starting with “OC” is part of the recall. The code is found in either the bottom or top of the can. The cans have net weights from 6 to 8 ounces.

The recalled products include Albacore Tuna in 8 ounce cans, Albacore Tuna Bellies in 8 ounce cans, Albacore Tuna No Salt in 8 ounce cans, Jalapeno Albacore Tuna in 8 ounce cans, Smoked Albacore Tuna in 8 ounce cans, and Garlic Albacore Tuna in 8 ounce cans. Also recalled is Pacific Salmon in 6 ounce cans, Smoked Pacific Salmon in 6 ounce cans, Silver Salmon in 6 ounce cans, and Chinook Salmon in 6 ounce cans. You can see pictures of product labels at the FDA web site.

These products were made by Skipanon Brand Seafoods LLC and the recall was initiated after the company was notified that the products may have been under-processed. An FDA inspection uncovered the problem.

As of October 9, 2015, the Garibaldi Cannery is selling new canned product from a different manufacturer to offer as replacements. These products have a code starting with “B” on the top of the can.

Clostridium botulinum bacteria produce a botulism toxin that causes these symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision, and trouble with speaking and/or swallowing. Breathing difficulties, abdominal dissension and constipation are other symptoms. If you are experiencing these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

If you purchased any of the products with codes starting with “OC” do not eat them. Discard in a sealed container or return to the place of purchase for a refund.
