Giant Eagle Green Beans Recalled for Listeria Monocytogenes

In the FDA’s weekly enforcement report for December 21, 2015, there is a recall for frozen French Style Green Beans, produced by Lakeside Foods and  packaged under the Giant Eagle and Shur fine labels for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. This report includes recalls that are not released to the public in the usual manner. There is no word on whether or not any illnesses have been reported in connection with the consumption of these products.

RecallThe recalled products are Giant Eagle French Style Green Beans in 16 ounce poly bags (454 grams). The UPC number is 30034-00978 and the best by date is 09/2017. Also recalled is Shur fine French Style Green Beans in 16 ounce (454 gram) packages. The UPC number on that product is 11161-13478 and the best by date is 09/2017.

If you purchased either of these products, do not eat them. Throw them away in a sealed container so other people and animals can’t eat them, or return them or the receipt to the place of purchase for a refund. Then wash your hands thoroughly after handling these products. You’ll need to clean out your freezer with a mild bleach solution, since Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures and freezing does not kill them.

If you ate these products, monitor yourself for the symptoms of Listeria food poisoning, which include high fever, stiff neck, flu-like symptoms, muscle aches, headache, and nausea. Pregnant women need to be especially careful about this illness, since listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth, even if the women is only mildly ill. If you do get sick, see your doctor and tell her you ate this recalled product.
