The symptoms of an E. coli infection include bloody and watery diarrhea, severe abdominal and stomach cramps, and a mild fever. Nausea and vomiting may also be present. These symptoms usually develop two to eight days after exposure. If treated with antibiotics, this infection can progress to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious illness that can cause kidney failure and death. The symptoms of HUS include little to no urine output, pale skin, lethargy, easy bruising, and a skin rash. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should see a doctor immediately.

FSIS is concerned that some of this ground beef may be frozen in consumer’s freezers. If you have any of these products in your home, throw them away in a sealed container or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
