Kroger Recalls Smoked Salmon for Listeria

Kroger has posted a recall for Private Reserve Rope Hung Smoked Scottish Salmon sold in 4 ounce packages. This affects Fred Meyer stores.

Recall SignageThe product could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. There is no word on whether or not any illnesses have been reported to date, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, can take up to 70 days to appear.

If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Discard in a sealed container so other people and animals can’t eat it, then wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. You can also return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

Then clean out your refrigerator with a solution of 1 tablespoon bleach to 1 gallon of water. Listeria bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures.

If you ate any of this salmon, monitor yourself for the symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, headache, nausea, and other flu-like symptoms. Pregnant women may only be mildly ill, but listeriosis can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and infection in the newborn baby.
